It was only a mter of time before Eastenders got around to marrying off the gays. My partner watches Eastenders and he has been doing so since the start of the show in 1985 and he LOVES it. I think that it just might be a British thing, cos while I do think it's funny sometimes, it reminds me too much of American soap-operas and I hated those!

One thing I will say about Eastenders is that it always manages to push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable in British society and many say that it is a true reflection of modern Britain. If that is true then times are a changing!

Things are really going to change for the two gay characters Christian Clarke (played by John Partridge) and Syed Masood (played by Marc Elliot) who are going to take the plunge and be the first same-sex couple to tie the knot on British televison. The scenes will be shown next month and of course producers have said that they are also planning for the couple to have a child by surrogate.

I think this is great. It really does put it out there for all to see that if gay people want a "normal" life then they can have one just as much as any straight couple could. Although this being Eastenders I am sure the path to civil partnership and baby-land will not be a smooth one!

So, what do you all make of this? Is Eastenders showing gays in a positive light and will this open people's minds or do you think it's just a silly, little T.V show with little cultural relevance, you be the judge!

First of all I would like to make a comment on the first paragraph of this article. Being gay is not about MODERN BRITAIN, in some ways Eastenders may be a reflection of Britain however lets not confuse the gay storyline with all the other misleading storylines currently portrayed in Eastenders. The most popular being the 'baby stealing psychopath Ronnie', who's storyline was apparently set to end in February after the public complaints hit the roof about that storyline. However since the spot light as died down I have noticed that the storyline with Ronnie has actually taken advantage of the loss of spotlight and extended itself almost as an insult to the complaints that were made against it.Ronnie's storyline does NOT represent modern BRITISH WOMEN, they don't steal babies. And lets not mention all the other dodgy asses in that drama.

TV in general seems to only enjoy showing the downsides and struggles of being gay despite the fact that no REAL GENUINE gay lads like me chooses to be gay, its almost as if the creators behind many gay characters in some programmes are on a secret mission of scaremongering and brain washing. I am gay and gay people have suffered in the hands of religious and none religious heterosexuals like since the beginning of time. I like (Christian & Syed), despite their plights they are the best gay role models I have seen on British TV if they go through with this Civil Ceremony Wedding. I am tired of seeing promiscuous heterosexual and gay characters on TV and even in adverts, too many times we see fictional characters swapping lovers with their on screen best mates. ITS TIME to see real love face the bastards out to wreck it and defeat them, I want to see ( Christian and Syed ) lead the way for gay lads like me to follow. Instead of gay lads committing to their friendships with their best girl mates and not respecting their male lovers. People will never learn what it means to be in committed relationships if the old hogs out there are not willing to help them understand what commitment means. For a start committing to someone they actually like and love and wanting to share their good and happy times with, aswel as the bad ones. I hope all gay lads both young and old who loves to spread their wings and seeds will actually sit up and watch real love in action, its a fictional love mind you. But it still has a lesson to be learnt. The programme writers didn't intend for this storyline to be inspiring, however Nature and fate have their way of revealing themselves. I wouldn't want to be Christian or Syed even if I had that option, but atleast they both have the self respect and self value to face the odds and not be foot stools for homophobes. WELL DONE Eastenders. xxxxx
