School teaches homosexuality is wrong

Students can now get a GCSE in Homophobia?

St Joseph’s Catholic School in Newport has come under fire for teaching pupils that homosexual acts are 'morally wrong' and that sex between two men or two women is purely self gratification.

The details of the school's curriculum were discovered by Cain Otley, who runs the Gay Business Network in South Wales. Students have been provided with learning material with the heading “What is the Catholic Church’s attitude to homosexuality?”

The notes provided by the school explain that sex is seen in the Bible as a way of a man and a woman to become ‘one flesh’ to be 'fruitful and multiply'. In contrast, ‘Homosexual sex can never be open to the potential of new life and so sex simply becomes a selfish way of gratifying a person.’

Otley was enraged to read claims that AIDS is seen by some Protestant groups as the ‘gay plague’ and as God’s punishment on gay people and their immoral lifestyle, which they argue, is against God’s law.

Otley explains, “I was completely shocked and disgusted at what I saw. The information contained in the booklet could incite homophobic bullying and homophobia in general.”

The school have defended the teaching material which was distributed to the students of St Joseph's Catholic School which they suggest was designed to help pupils understand what is required by the Welsh Joint Education Committee exam specifications.

A spokesman for St Joseph's said “The information is purely factual as these are the points that students need to know for the examination.”

“In a Roman Catholic school the church’s teaching on sexuality has to be presented clearly and in lessons this is done in a sensitive way […] In lessons they will have discussed these points and put forward opposing views and these will also be included in their examination answers where they are required to give all sides of the argument.”

In response to the notes which claim that AIDS is the 'gay plague', she argued that pupils are taught that whilst AIDS is sometimes seen as the 'gay plague' the Catholic Church teaches that no illness is God's punishment.

I am just thankful that a friends child brought this to my attention.... they were actually distraught to think that if an examination question was to arise on this subject that they would fail the exam if they didn't conform to what they were being taught...... the catholic church has got a lot to answer for when it comes to inciting hate - doesn't the bible teach that god forgives everyone - why do they need to forgive love? I am in a loving relationship with a partner of the same sex, we don't harm anyone or hurt anyone - I took advice from my grandfather years ago who said..... I don't go to church, but i live by the book, he was so right - he spent his life making people like him, not hate him - perhaps he should have been the latest pope if he were alive, instead of someone with Nazi connections  - how do these catholic types preach such filth when their own people are abusing young children while the church covers it up?

Thanks for your comment Cain, I completely agree with you. But I shall play devils advocate because it opens up the debate...plus it's fun.

I attended Catholic schools for my whole education and took everything with a pinch, or in some cases, a handful of salt. I think that what the school representative said (The information is purely factual as these are the points that students need to know for the examination) is quite true, the school and indeed the teacher may not agree wholly with the teachings, but unfortunately, the students need to know these views in order to pass their exams.

Whilst I was studying I remember having to learn for an exam that co-habitation is a sin; sex before marriage is a sin; sex is for procreation only; and that the withdrawal method and 'rhythm method' (based on the menstrual cycle)are the only 'moral' and 'pure' ways of birth control.

What was most bizarre was in one lesson we were taught the withdrawal and rhythm method. In another lesson we were warned of the dangers of unprotected sex and STI's etc. So this begged the question 'So what is the safest way to have sex?'

The answer I was given was, "The only way to be 100% safe is not to have sex at all."

Feeling dissatisfied with this response I decided to reinterpret the teachings of the Bible to mean that anal and oral sex are both excellent methods of birth control.

Interesting that they are happy to discredit protestants with homophobia (gay plague comments), when actually the RC church's teaching is far worse... apparently I am 'intrinsically disordered', 'a threat to the family', and have 'no place in ther kingdom of God'. Now that's telling me.

More telling perhaps is the offical response to the current abuse scandel, Ratzingers terrier, Lombardi (offical spokespriest for the Vatican) first suggested that the abuse was mostly homosexual ... and restricted to the 'problem' of gay priests. Which shows that in their mind homosexuality = pedophilia/abuse (where have they been the past 30 years?), and protecting/defending the church's archaic (11th century) view of human sexuality/celibacy is nmore important than understanding and supporting the victims of abuse.
